Cultural programme in winter term 2017/18
The leisure programme and registration for excursions in winter term start in October.

Information Day of the International Office for international students
On Monday, October 2nd 2017 , you will meet many important people and organizations that will help you to study successfully at TU Dresden. Above all, the tutors will support you at the start of your studies and go on a campus tour with you. The Culture Team and student organizations will be glad to meet you at the info market.

Please fill out the online registration form and then pay the fee as soon as possible during office hours at the Cultural Office in the International Office. Only after payment the place is bindingly booked. Please bring your student ID with you when paying. Payment via bank transfer or card is not possible.
Note: Your registration is NOT valid as a reservation. First come, first served.
The cultural programme is open to international and German undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at TU Dresden. The programme for PhD students and international guest scientists is organised by the Welcome Center.
With your registration you accept the terms and conditions of the Cultural Office.
The excursions are mainly offered in German. Tutors will translate into English during guided tours and workshops.

I honestly would like to thank the Kulturbüro of the TUD for the big chances they gave me to get to know better the city Dresden. The organisation and the involvement in different kind of activities have to be considered as a treasure. I think it is not so common to go abroad and find people who are good and kind.
The Cultural Office staff keep you in discovering a new city, giving you little advices in order to enjoy every day pleasures the city can give (without them this couldn’t be the same!)
The trips and the chances to win tickets for concerts or other activities are a gift for me and I guess for every foreign student who comes here. I really appreciate their work and the way they organize things. The more activities they would organize, the more I would like to be present to enjoy Dresden with fun, happiness and joy! J
When I first arrived in Dresden to start my Erasmus I was completely lost and alone, I had no friends and I didn’t know where to go. Basically, the normal feeling that everyone can experience when arriving in a new country.
When at the Immatriculation day I saw for the first time the poster of the Cultural Office, I must admit that I was a little suspicious but curious at the same time.
Some time I can be very shy and stubborn, but then I thought:” Why not? Let’s start this adventure in the right way, I should try and register for a few things”.
So, I tried the Welcome tour on our very own DVB tram and I was really amazed, everyone was so friendly and enthusiastic and in just one hour or so (while sitting on a tram going around the beautiful city of Dresden) I felt that I had made the right decision. A few days later I decided to register to all the trips that they were offering during this Winter Semester. And I have to say that I absolutely didn’t regret it.
In my opinion the best trip of all was Berlin, we have seen so many things in just four days, the price of the trip (only 90 euros everything included) was ridiculous considering that everything was so well planned and organized that I was more and more amazed every day, even if the weather was very bad and cold. Everyday there was a new reason to get ready and start the day in the best way possible: with the huge buffet breakfast of the hotel. I am just kidding, but it’s true 😊
The girls working for the Cultural Office are like angels (yes, exactly like the three Charlie’s angels 😊), they are always so enthusiastic and ready to help and give you advices and tips about the trips or the life in Dresden and they never hesitate to give you a big smile even if it’s freezing cold and pouring rain, yes, we didn’t have a lot of luck, because the weather was always very bad, only for us.
During all these trips I have seen breath taking beautiful places in the region of Saxony, places that I didn’t even know that existed, I have been amazed by castles, stories, ballets, history, museums and the stunning nature of this beautiful region.
The most important thing was that I met so many new people, coming from different countries, different cultures, speaking every kind of possible language. I opened my self-up, trying new things and doing my best to enjoy every moment as much as I could. Even if I was thousands of km far from home, with these weekly plans I never felt homesick or alone, because I had found a new international family.
Even if my week had been stressful or full of lessons and new challenges, during these trips I really felt free and happy to have done the right decision of coming to Dresden, almost blessed.
Last but not least, what about the food? I have tried so many different and delicious thing from all around the world, more that I could have ever imagined; from the super classic German Schnitzel eaten inside and old medieval castle, to the vegan food of the hipster restaurant in Leipzig, to the classic Christmas meal of the German tradition.
Tip for the readers: Just register on time and be ready for a surprise!

City tour on a DVB tram
The semester will start with an invitation by the Cultural Office, DVB and the students of the Faculty of Transportation and Traffic Sciences to discover Dresden on a special tram journey. On Saturday, October 14th, we will ride around various parts of the city and show you several sights and places of interest. The team of the Cultural Office will share personal insights and give tips about places to go to and things to do during the winter semester!
Free admission, also for international guest scientists and their friends and colleagues, no preliminary registration required.
Pick up your ticket at the Cultural Office, during the office hours, and on the Information Day of the International Office for new students, on October 2th.

City Rally – A day up on the towers of Dresden
Get to know Dresden from the top during our city rally! With interesting tasks and beautiful views, we will take you on an exciting trip through Dresden on Saturday, October 21st. We climb on different towers like Hausmann tower, church Dreikönigskirche, or the view at Weißer Hirsch. Later all groups meet for lunch at the Studentenwerksforum and can share their results and experiences.

Berlin – Weekend trip to German history and culture
Our first weekend trip this winter term will take us to Berlin, from 28th to 31st of October*. You will get to know the capital from the water side on a boat trip on river Spree. As well, you will get the chance to discover the German parliament, the Bundestag, from the inside. On the famous museum island, antique treasures are waiting for you. Afterwards the Panorama Tower at Potsdamer Platz offers a great view over the city center. Learn about the recent German history on a guided walk around the once divided city - capital of the reunited German Federal Republic since 1990. In addition to the Assisi Panometer, you will also get to know the Berlin Cathedral.
* Tuesday, 31st of October, is Reformation Day - a bank holiday in Saxony.

DDV stadium tour - visit to Dynamo Dresden
On Saturday, November 4th, you get to discover the soccer stadium by the Großer Garten, home of the local club Dynamo Dresden. Maybe we even meet a play at the changing rooms? After enjoying the great view from the media stand, 30 meters above the field, you can plan your next soccer adventure at the lunch table - and show your talents at the goal wall shooting!

Dress rehearsal – Staatskapelle Dresden at Semper opera
Have you ever experienced the magic atmosphere of the Semper opera? On Friday, November 10th 2017, we take you to a matinee – the dress rehearsal of the 3rd Symphony concert by Staatskapelle Dresden. There will be an introduction to the pieces before world class musicians play pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauß.

Radebeul - vineyards and dance theatre "Countess Cosel"
Radebeul is located between vineyards and the river Elbe, right before the gates of Dresden. The city uniquely combines wine, culture and nature experiences. We will discover the multifaceted richness of this city, which is considered to be the heart of the Saxon Wine Route. Where Karl May has written his well-known novels, we will go for a walk by the footsteps of the famous writer on Saturday, November 11th. Before we get inspired in the theater by the danced story of the Countess Cosel, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.

City of music - Leipzig
Our second weekend trip, on November 18th and 19th, takes us to the musical city of Leipzig. After a guided walking tour that highlights the stories of Bach, Wagner and the famous concert hall the “Gewandhaus”, you can listen to a part of Bach’s musical world in the St. Thomas Church. In the “Zeitgeschichtliches Forum” we will immerse ourselves in Germany’s more recent history – namely, the peaceful revolution and reunification which started in Leipzig, in 1989. As well ascent the famous monument Völkerschlachtdenkmal to get a great view from above.

Fortress Stolpen - The prison of Countess Cosel
On Saturday, November 25th, we will travel through the centuries during our visit to Stolpen. The town is famous for its fortress and the tragic fate of a fascinating woman - Anna Constantia von Cosel. For 49 years, the most famous mistress of Augustus the Strong was imprisoned in Stolpen Castle. The castle fountain with its 82 meters is the deepest natural stone basalt fountain on earth! For the first time, the name "basalt" was used for the black-bluish columns of Stolpen. From here the name went around the world.

Yenidze – Stories under the cupola
Dream with us from 1001 fairy tales in the Yenidze Dresden and join us for a night of advent stories on December 2nd. That night you can listen to funny stories around the time before Christmas, called "Stille Nacht allerseits". You have the opportunity to enter the cupola of the architectural attraction in the style of a mosque. In the former cigarette factory you can find now a fairy tale theater and a restaurant.

Fortress Scharfenstein - Advent season in the ore mountains
On Sunday,December 3rd, we will experience the life of Karl Stülpner during a guided tour to the frotress Scharfenstein. There are many legends around the so-called „Saxon Robin Hood“, who lived in the 17th century. And of course, there is a reason why we choose the visit of the „Christmas country“ Erzgebirge in the Advent season: In Scharfenstein you can not only increase your knowledge about the castle, but also get into the right Christmas feeling! On the market square we will come into contact with famous Christmas traditions of the ore mountains. Get surprised!

On Friday, December 8th, with the assistance of Santa’s little helpers, the International X-MAS Party of TU Dresden will transform your classrooms in the “Hörsaalzentrum” (HSZ Bergstraße 64) into a party location—from the foyer to the Audimax! The evening begins with an international Christmas market with exotic food and music. Later, you will find a colourful cultural programme with contributions from all over the world. Afterwards, you can dance the night away on the dance floor.

Ice Disco
On Saturday, December 16th, we would like to spend one last evening before Christmas break with you. Show us your best moves on ice skates at this fun-filled evening at the ice rink and dance with us the whole evening!

Treasury of the SLUB
The university library is not only a place to prepare for exams or for writing papers. In its treasure chamber you can discover fascinating and precious books. Take a break from studying, on Friday, January 19th 2018, and accompany us on a guided tour of the book museum - rooms of the library, that you probably haven’t seen before! They preserve treasures from all over the world – amongst others Martin Luther’s scripts, the Maya Codex and an ancient travel Quran.
