Admission requirements
• Owning a first university degree in Economics or a related field of study recognized in Germany or a degree from a state or state-recognized university of cooperative education in economics,
• Proficiency in English according to the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,
• Proof of particular aptitude for the program by demonstration of:
35 credit points (ECTS) earned in economics with a good average grade and
15 credit points (ECTS) earned in quantitative methods (Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, e.g.).
Aptitude assessment procedure
The participation in an aptitude assessment or selection procedure is a prerequisite for enrollment in this degree program. Please note that the deadline for submitting an application may be earlier than the application deadlines for the degree program (see above under application deadlines). The following links will provide you with information on all documents to be submitted within the specified deadline and on the relevant regulations.

Notes on the application process
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. General information about the degree program
The Master’s program in Public and International Economics (PIE) equips you with advanced methodological and scientific skills, preparing you to develop effective solutions to economic policy challenges in a globalized world.
Study contents
Semester 1: Foundations (compulsory modules)
Your first semester builds essential methodological and subject knowledge. All modules are compulsory and provide a balanced mix of theory and empirical methods.
Semesters 2 & 3: Electives (choose your focus)
Shape your studies by choosing from a wide range of electives. There are no compulsory modules, but you must fulfill these requirements (total: 60 CP):
• Core Electives: at least 35 CP
• Presenting and Discussing: at least 10 CP
• Free Electives: up to 15 CP (or use these credits for more Core or Presenting/Discussing modules)
Semester 4: Research Design & Master’s Thesis
Your final semester focuses on independent research:
• Research Design (10 CP): Analytical and methodological preparation, with ongoing feedback from your supervisor
• Master’s Thesis (20 CP): Conduct independent research on an economic topic over 18 weeks
