Admission requirements
• Owning a first university degree in Economics or a related field of study recognized in Germany or a degree from a state or state-recognized university of cooperative education in economics,
• Proficiency in English according to the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,
• Proof of particular aptitude for the program by demonstration of:
35 credit points (ECTS) earned in economics with a good average grade.
15 credit points (ECTS) earned in quantitative methods (Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, e.g.).
Aptitude assessment procedure
The participation in an aptitude assessment or selection procedure is a prerequisite for enrollment in this degree program. Please note that the deadline for submitting an application may be earlier than the application deadlines for the degree program (see above under application deadlines). Notes on the application process
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. General information about the degree program
Most of the pressing economic challenges of our time, such as climate change, financial crises, disruptions in commodity markets, and income inequalities, do not stop at borders. The Master's degree program in Public and International Economics (PIE) teaches you how to tackle these problems.
Taking the interlinkages between national and international decision-making levels into account, this program provides a sound understanding of economic policy issues in a globalized world and derives options for action. With this knowledge, you are well-prepared to analyze acute economic policy issues and develop sound policy proposals.
Study contents
The Master’s degree program in Public and International Economics comprises a total of 120 credit points distributed across 4 semesters. It is taught entirely in English.
The first semester provides fundamental methodological and contextual knowledge in amount of 30 credit points.
In the second and third semesters, you can choose from a broad selection of current issues in economic policy within an international context, from the social welfare state to fiscal matters and international financial markets to immigration and development economics. From this core content, you must choose at least 35 credit points. Then, at least another 10 credit points will come from interactive teaching formats such as seminars and projects. To round off, topics from neighboring disciplines are available, too (15 credit points maximum).
The degree program concludes with the Master’s thesis (20 credit points) in the fourth semester. You will receive support in planning and conducting your research in the parallel research seminar (10 credit points) .

The Master’s degree in Public and International Economics enables you for a number of high-responsibility jobs and leadership positions. Your skills are in high demand wherever sound knowledge and qualified analysis of economics policy relationships in a global world are needed. This comprises many areas, from national and international institutions – such as public administration, associations, chambers, NGOs and unions – to banks, insurance companies and large enterprises to media.
And, of course, a good final grade in your Master’s degree program paves the way for a doctorate!
