Admission requirements
Requirements to be admitted to the degree program:
1. A first university degree which is recognized in Germany or a qualification from an officially recognized vocational academy in Social Pedagogy or Social Work,
2. Broad knowledge and skills in the areas of professional and discipline-theoretical approaches to social pedagogy, foundations of education and empirical research methods, and
3. An internship comprising 450 hours or a practical module (at least 15 credit points) as part of the prerequisite degree program pursuant to No. 1.
Aptitude assessment procedure
The participation in an aptitude assessment or selection procedure is a prerequisite for enrollment in this degree program. Please note that the deadline for submitting an application may be earlier than the application deadlines for the degree program (see above under application deadlines). The following links will provide you with information on all documents to be submitted within the specified deadline and on the relevant regulations.
German language requirements
International applicants and German applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification are kindly advised to read the requirements for German-language courses.
Notes on the application process
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. General information about the degree program
This Master’s degree program conveys the skills necessary for students to handle complex tasks and problems by applying specialized knowledge from the realms of social pedagogy, education and social science. The degree program qualifies graduates for a career in academia and in non-academic social services as well as for work at institutions of applied socio-pedagogical research. Students gain a broad range of specialist knowledge and are able to use academic methods as well as skills of abstraction and theory-practice transfer. These skills and insights prepare them to tackle the multi-faceted and complex issues associated with highly qualified professional analysis, to understand the composition of socio-pedagogical areas of work and activity in the field of social work, and to conduct research in a scholarly setting.
Study contents
The Master’s degree in Social Pedagogy is research-oriented.
In addition to in-depth knowledge of empirical social research in research and professional applications, the degree program comprises social education theory, historical, socio-theoretical and socio-political aspects of social education and welfare studies at an advanced level. The degree program also covers knowledge of living circumstances, social issues and social education-endorsed options for intervention as well as social institutions and transition periods and their importance in social education contexts. Other topics include theoretical methods of social education and social work, in-depth knowledge of research on forms of address and social education casework.
Students will survey correlations within social education and acquire in-depth specialist knowledge, skills and key career-based proficiencies. They will graduate with the ability to identify, classify and process phenomena in social education and will be able to apply scientific methods and findings. Students will possess the required theoretical and practical expertise and will be capable of acting responsibly in a liberal, democratic and social constitutional state.
