Expanding a partnership in research and teaching: Delegation from the University of Warwick visits TUD
A high-ranking delegation from the University of Warwick visits TU Dresden. The meetings serve to expand on the bilateral partnership in research and teaching.
The University of Warwick, a leading university in the UK, has been a member of TU Dresden’s network of partners for over ten years. TU Dresden joined the European Universities Initiative EUTOPIA in September 2021 at the University of Warwick’s invitation, thus consolidating the two universities’ cooperation.
In addition to longstanding Erasmus partnerships, in particular in English and American Studies, the universities have an active exchange of doctoral candidates in History as well as a number of joint research projects in Mathematics, Economics and Political Science. The University of Warwick is also a partner university in the “Hands on Particle Physics” international master classes organized by TU Dresden and QuarkNet Notre Dame.
Aside from collaboration at the educational level, the two universities share a municipal link. Since 1959, the City of Coventry, where the University of Warwick is located, has been paired with Dresden, making it Dresden’s oldest sister city. Both cities were severely bombed during World War II and have since stood as a symbol of peace and reconciliation.
The high-ranking delegation from the University of Warwick visited TU Dresden with the goal of advancing the two universities’ academic cooperation as well as expanding on the bilateral relations at a central level. In addition to round tables with the University Executive Board and representatives of the Graduate Academy, the European Project Center and the Center for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, a visit to the Excellence Cluster Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (ct.qmat) and a meeting with researchers from various faculties were on the agenda. The delegation’s stay was rounded off with a Monday evening performance at the Semperoper opera house.
The delegation included the following representatives from the University of Warwick: Professor Stuart Croft (Vice-Chancellor and President), Professor Mike Shipman (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, International), Professor Caroline Meyer (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research), Professor Seán Hand (Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Europe), Professor Daniel Branch (Co-Academic Director for Africa and Academic Director for Doctoral College), Professor John Greenlees (Head, Mathematics Department), Professor Marin Alexe (Chair, Functional Materials, Department of Physics), Professor Jonathan Boltze (Professor of Neuroscience, Department of Life Sciences) and Dr. Gillian Olivieri (Associate Director, International Strategy and Relations).
