“MOLLIER HOUSE FOUNDATION” SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT – PHIL GOLDBERG
The “Mollier House Foundation” supports students with disabilities and chronic illnesses
Phil Goldberg, doctoral student at the Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at the Institute of Materials Science within the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering is one of the TU Dresden students who was awarded funding in 2019 by the “Mollier House Foundation.” The foundation is held in trust by the Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden and advocates in particular for students with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
The three-month doctoral scholarship afforded Phil Goldberg an extension for writing his dissertation in the form of compensation for disadvantages. The objective of his work is to make an independent scientific contribution to the use of pyroelectric materials for anti-icing applications. The extension proved necessary since he requires more time to formulate and write down his thoughts on account of his restricted linguistic abilities resulting from his congenital deafness. In addition to his academic work, Phil Goldberg competed in the FINA World Masters Championships in South Korea in August of last year, where he placed 6th in the 200m Butterfly. Exercise and entering athletics competitions are key for his very active social life.
The “Mollier House Foundation” commemorates the work of Geh. Hofrat Dr. phil. and Honorary Dr.-Ing. Richard Mollier (1863–1935), who was a lecturer and researcher in the field of technical thermodynamics at TH Dresden. Funds from the Mollier family were used to create the Foundation and are intended to help support students with disabilities, in particular those with autism spectrum disorder. In addition to awarding scholarships, the Foundation also funds study assistants and the acquisition of specific material resources.
