More time for science
The "More Time for Science" program ends on a positive note
The project "More Time for Science" is entering the home stretch: Initiated in the summer of 2021 as a reaction to the drastically changed living conditions caused by the Corona pandemic, the project was intended to support, in particular, temporarily employed scientists whose scientific work was incompatible with pandemic-related family obligations (childcare, homeschooling (for children under 12), care of relatives) by funding student and scientific assistants or honorary staff. From the beginning, "More Time for Science" met with a great and positive response. The applicants expressed their gratitude that their special needs were seen and that support was made possible at such short notice. In the course of 3 selection rounds, a total of 82 applications were submitted, all of which could be funded. The total funding amounted to around 185.000 euros.
The total overview confirms the assumption of the project initiators that mainly female scientists would apply for support. It is also interesting to look at the fields to which the applicants belong. While around 15 applications each were received from the fields of mathematics and natural sciences, humanities and social sciences and engineering, 23 applications were received from the field of construction and environment. The most common reason for submitting an application was childcare, with 80 cases in total. By the end of the year, all applicants will be supported in the organizational implementation and spending of the funding. At the beginning of 2022, the feedback from the grant recipients and an evaluation of the project will mark the end of the project. The Vice Rector for University Culture, Prof. Dr. Roswitha Böhm, sums up: "I am pleased with the success of the program for several reasons. On the one hand, the great response shows that the TU Dresden has responded to an urgent need with this offer. Secondly, the project was realized in a comparatively short period of time, which was only possible due to the high level of commitment of all those involved. Many thanks for this! Above all, however, it became clear that the support provided here for female scientists, especially in the qualification phase, and a better compatibility of career and family are two goals that we must continue to pursue at TU Dresden in the future."
