Thanks to funding from the Equality and Diversity Incentive Fund, the Center for Continuing Education will be offering language courses from April 2022 that offer the opportunity to learn basic German sign language skills. These can be attended by students and employees of TU Dresden.

• Sensitization for communication differences (e.g. the interaction of language & facial expressions)
• Acquisition of the finger alphabet
• Getting to know individual gestures for daily (professional) practice.

Gestures, facial expressions and signs have always been linked to language all over the world and are an essential part of communication. In dialog with other cultures, however, misunderstandings can quickly arise because gestures and facial expressions, like languages in general, have cultural connotations. Every language is accompanied by gestures and signs. Although sign language has been used for centuries, German Sign Language has only been recognized as a language in its own right since 2002.

Sign language

Sign language is a natural language that is used for communication, especially by non-hearing and hearing-impaired people. It is a native language. Around 200,000 people in Germany speak German sign language. Around 80,000 of these are deaf. Sign language forms the social and cultural foundation of the German sign language community. Learn more

Notes on the course

• The following courses will be offered in WS 2024/25:

  • Introductory courses: 2 online courses, 1 face-to-face course
  •  Advanced courses: 1 online course, 1 face-to-face course
  •  NEW - Conversation course: 1 face-to-face course
• All courses will take place weekly. The future courses will last 90 minutes (instead of the previous 60 minutes) and will be based on the regular lecture times. There will be 12 dates per course.
• In the beginning, participants may find it unfamiliar that there is no spoken language at all in the courses; in the digital format, the audio level remains muted.
• Communication in the courses takes place almost exclusively via sign language, with the chat function sometimes being used as a substitute/ or written on slips of paper.

Registration for the courses takes place via the Center for Continuing Education (ZfW), from now on via the OPAL platform. Under the respective link, you will find the link to the course in the ZfW catalog, where you can register.
