The DLR Institute for Software Research and Simulation is coming to TU Dresden
It took us some time, but finally the decision has been made: the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will set up a software institute in Dresden. The institute is to be embedded in the Lehmann Center, a central scientific institution of the TU Dresden.
For the TU Dresden, a long-cherished wish is coming true. The rector of the TUD, Professor Hans Mueller-Steinhagen, former long-time director of the Institute at the DLR, has been working towards the establishment of a DLR institute at the TU Dresden since 2010, and is thrilled about the decision: "DLR is known for its locations at very high-performance universities. Therefore, I see today's decision as a further confirmation of the excellence of the TU Dresden." Furthermore, the establishment of the DLR software institute "is a success and enrichment for the TU Dresden as well as for the city of Dresden and the Free State Saxony. "
For many years, there have been many very successful scientific activities at the TUD in the fields of software development, high-performance computing, big data, 5G-Lab, Internet of Things, and Internet security on which the new DLR Institute can elaborate. Professor Wolfgang E. Nagel, Director of the Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) at the TUD, emphasizes: "Together with the Lehmann Center, the DLR Software Institute offers an excellent opportunity to connect new innovative fields of application, such as the cyber-physical systems, methodical and content of research within areas of Cloud Computing, High Performance Calculations and Big Data. In this way, we can develop these topics of software research, which have not yet been sustained, as key topics of our scientific research. "
The aim of the new Dresden Institute is the strategic platform research and development to support the virtual system capability of the German aerospace industry in the areas of hardware, software and application systems. The focus is on the research of innovative technologies for application-oriented implementation in the areas of production technology and robotics, systems and simulation as well as virtual reality.
According to Professor Hans-Müller-Steinhagen, there should also be close cooperation with the other partner institutions of the DRESDEN-concept. "The DLR Institute is a high-caliber complement to the portfolio of non-university research facilities in Dresden and I will exert myself to make it a member of our scientific network DRESDEN-concept as soon as possible." The further strengthening of DRESDEN-concept is recognized by TU Dresden as an important building block for their application in the next round of the Excellence Initiative.
Already in 2017, the first stage of the institute will be implemented with about 50 employees, who will be working in the TUD rooms. A new building for the software institute is in its planning stages in the immediate vicinity of the high-performance computer of the TUD, in order to create a spatial integration as well as in terms of content.
