HDEEM: High Definition Energy Efficiency Monitoring
The energy consumption and its associated costs are more and more becoming a limiting factor in High Performance Computing (HPC). Energy-efficient High Performance Computing is the focus of the research cooperation between ZIH and the French company Bull. In the course of this research project, the effectiveness of mechanisms for saving energy in modern hardware will be evaluated and applied to production systems. As a first step, using a software-based measurement database will enable energy accounting on a per-job basis. Later on in the project, the second phase of the procurement of the new HPC and storage system will be equipped with a novel power measurement infrastructure designed for scalability and high accuracy. Using this infrastructure, researchers will be able to conduct energy-efficiency analyses and optimizations of parallel HPC user codes.
