Career paths: carrying out alumni, student and expert surveys for the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden
Runtime
2012-2013
Contracting Authority
Contracting Authority and Financing through the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber (HfM Dresden)
Goals/ Summary
Together with the increasing autonomy of Universities, information about their performance as a place of education and research is becoming more important. Evaluations of their own offers in the form of student surveys, alumni surveys and other analyses of the job market for those educated at the University. This is just as valid for scientific universities as it is for artistic universities.
To ensure degree programs at the HfM which are practice-oriented, the following was carried out and evaluated within the project:
- An alumni survey assessing the competences and chances on the job market (approx. 700 alumni)
- An expert survey about the (regional) music job market (expectations, strengths, weaknesses of HfM alumni, the need for change in their education)
- A student survey regarding the practice-oriented offers of the HfM (use of these offers, ideas about their future careers)(approx. 300 bachelor students)
This project was preceded by an evaluation of the degree program Music Pedagogy as well as the Minor in Piano, carried out 2006-2007. Considering the upcoming modularization of the degree programs, the program Music Pedagogy was analyzed through the use of a student, instructor and alumni survey, above all in regards to its feasibility. A student survey regarding the Minor in Piano was also carried out.
The emphases of the study were:
- Organization of the degree program
- Quality of studies and instruction
- Stresses
- Conveying competence
- Beginning a career
