"Preis der Ostdeutschen Bauindustrie" - Award for Graduates of the Faculty of Civil Engineering
Abhinav Anil Khedkar from the Institute for Structural Analysis and Dynamics of Supporting Structures receives this year's East German Construction Industry Award for his Master's thesis "Data-driven simulation methods: training recurrent neural networks for inelastic materials with consideration of fuzziness". In his scientific work, he dealt with the use of artificial intelligence methods for the calculation of load-bearing structures and their comparison with previous calculation methods. The methods used offer a unique possibility to reduce the usually enormous computational effort, while at the same time the complex material behaviour can be precisely mapped. With the award, the jurors of the Construction Industry Association recognise his innovative approach to unleashing the unlimited potential of artificial intelligence for civil engineering.
The East German Construction Industry Prize is awarded in the fields of civil engineering and architecture, this year for the 16th time. The Bauindustrieverband Ost e. V. (BIVO) attaches great importance to innovative ideas from aspiring graduates. Particularly in view of the current challenges of the industry and the possibilities of new technologies, potentials can be released that have a positive influence on building in practice. BIVO President Jörg Muschol is pleased with the high quality of the award-winning theses: "In addition to dealing with current challenges, it is also important for us as a construction industry to keep an eye on emerging innovations and trends. This year's winners of the East German Construction Industry Award complement each other perfectly in this respect. While the prize winner in civil engineering is tackling AI integration, the graduate in architecture is focusing on the design of sustainable and ecologically compatible buildings. This year's winners once again underline the openness to innovation of the construction industry and make me optimistic about the future."
In the architecture sub-category, the diploma thesis by Zeno Böck (TU Dresden) entitled "Coexistence - Animal, Plant, Human" is awarded. The work contains a sustainable hybrid construction made of wood and reinforced concrete with the addition of steel components for the small town of Glashütte in the Eastern Ore Mountains. In doing so, the graduate created an ecologically highly interesting example of how life in the countryside with selective high densification
could look like.
In addition to the "East German Construction Industry Prize" in the fields of architecture and civil engineering, the two diploma theses by Marcel May and Jonas Scharf (both TU Dresden) were each awarded a special prize. Bauindustrieverband Ost e. V. represents the interests of 260 construction companies with 20,000 employees in the states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
