Project description
The project aims at the development and implementation test of a modern and effective sensor technology method by means of ion mobility spectrometry for the early detection of forest pest species based on emitted volatiles in their various developmental stages. For doing so, nun moth (Lymantria monacha L.), oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea L.) and European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) are going to be used as example species. To be able to provide a valid technology, the volatiles emitted by insects and infested trees are studied and identified during comprehensive laboratory and field measurements in a first step. On the basis of these results the ion mobility spectrometry as sensor technology is further developed and configured. The long-term objective is to develop a user-friendly hand-held device, which is easy to operate and used in forest monitoring. The recorded data are going to complement an existing software application for damage prognosis (preparation of risk maps) with real-life damage data from a forest enterprise.
