Evolution of Geodetic Positioning Techniques
Satellite based positioning, i.e. GNSS, has dramatically transformed geodetic positioning techniques. The rapid developments of GNSS positioning will have further far-reaching effects on geodetic positioning.
Today, cm-accurate positioning requires a network of GNSS reference stations with inter-station distances of several 10 km and one of the positioning techniques which are summarized under the term Network RTK. These techniques get more and more competition from Precise Point Positioning (PPP), especially in its enhancement PPP-RTK.
The regional GNSS reference station networks will keep their importance even in future. However, alternatives will exist which allow centimeter level realization of the geodetic datum without such regional reference stations. What will be the geodetic positioning techniques beyond PPP and PPP-RTK?
