July 12, 2022: Unconditional basic income
The introduction of an unconditional basic income in Germany has been discussed for many years. All citizens would be paid a fixed monthly amount, without being tied to any conditions. An unconditional basic income would replace all existing social benefits, thus radically simplifying and de-bureaucratizing social security. How high would such an unconditional basic income have to be? How high would taxes have to be to finance the basic income? What behavioral responses would such a system trigger? What would the new autonomy bring - for life satisfaction and for precarious work? What have we learned from field experiments on basic income?
Prof. Dr. Ronnie Schöb (FU Berlin, Department of Economics, Chair of Finance), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schupp (DIW Berlin, infrastructure facility "Socio-Economic Panel") and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wegge (TU Dresden, Faculty of Psychology, Chair of Industrial and Organizational Psychology) spoke about these and other questions in the 60-minute discussion on July 12, 2022. The panel disucussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum and organized together with the ifo Institute.

May 10, 2022: War, Sanctions and Macroeconomics
The war in Ukraine is causing unimaginable human suffering in Europe. In order to influence the conflict by non-military means, severe sanctions have been imposed on Russia at various levels. What are the sanctions doing to Russia and the global economy? Are the sanctions severe enough? What consequences can occur in Germany? And can the impact on the global economy also affect China to take a stronger position in the conflict? Note: Given the dynamic situation, the issues to be discussed may change in the coming weeks.
These questions were discussed by Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Bachmann (Department of Economics, University of Notre Dame) and Prof. Dr. Stefan Kooths (Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Business Cycle and Growth Division) on May 10, 2022. The discussion panel was moderated by Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann. The online discussion was held in cooperation with the ifo Institute.
May 3, 2022: Real Facts: Communication through science
The major crises of recent years - migration crisis, accelerated climate change, COVID-19 crisis and the war in Ukraine - were or are accompanied by fake news. The panel on May 3, 2022 took a closer look at the role of science in times of fake news. Can scientific consensus on basic facts counteract false information? Where has science successfully reduced perceptual distortions in the public? Where do scientific views and public opinion diverge particularly strongly and why? What is the role of the media? Can good science communication reduce social divide somewhat? How can scientific results be used to reach decision-makers, e.g. politicians or executives?
Dr. Anna Kerkhof (ifo Institute for Economic Research, Center for Industrial Economics and New Technologies), Jun.-Prof. Dr. Anna Sophie Kümpel (TU Dresden, Faculty of Philosophy, Institute for Communication Studies) and Prof. Dr. Marina Münkler (TU Dresden, Faculty of Philosophy, Institute for German Studies) discussed the topic. Prof. Dr. Thomas Günther and Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum moderated the panel, which was held in cooperation with the ifo Institute.
