08.12.2020: "Corona warning apps: support in the fight against the pandemic?"
The four-part online discussion series "Corona, Economy and Finance" in the WS 2020/21 started on December 8, 2020 with a panel on corona warning apps. When the German warning app was launched in June 2020, more than 20 countries around the world were already using warning apps. The high expectations of the app have so far only been partially met in Germany. This first panel shed light on why this is the case and what support corona warning apps can provide in the fight against the pandemic.
The panel discussed:
- Prof. Dr. Alfred Benedikt Brendel (TU Dresden, Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Intelligent Systems and Services)
- Prof. Dr. Martin Wiener (TU Dresden, Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Business Engineering)
Moderation:
- Prof. Dr. Susanne Strahringer (TU Dresden, Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Information Systems in Industry and Commerce)
14.01.2021: "60 minutes: Corona debt: A danger for companies and the state?"
The coronavirus crisis has pushed companies and public budgets to their limits. Some even fear a wave of insolvencies in the corporate sector.
How well have companies come through the crisis so far? Where are the biggest risks? Can and should the state do more without getting itself into trouble? What scope do federal, state and local government budgets still have? How can we get out of the rapidly growing mountain of debt?"
The panelists were:
- Andreas Aumüller (Creditreform Dresden Aumüller KG, personally liable partner)
- Prof. Dr. Thomas Günther (TU Dresden, Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, Chair of Management Accounting and Controlling)
- Prof. Dr. Joachim Ragnitz (ifo Dresden and TU Dresden, Faculty of Business and Economics, Honorary Professor for the Economics of Structural Change)

- Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann (TU Dresden, Faculty of Business and Economics, Chair of International Economic Relations)
21.01.2021: "60 minutes: How Corona is changing the economy and companies"
From the perspective of three specialist areas - controlling, energy management and marketing - it will be shown how Corona is changing the economy and what Corona can mean for the management of companies. To this end, three specific considerations from the aforementioned specialist areas are presented and discussed
The panel discussed:

28.01.2021: "Corona and the impact on the inpatient and outpatient sector and the production of healthcare services"
The German healthcare industry has always proven to be an overall economic stabilizer during crises. But does this also apply to the corona crisis, which is affecting key service centers on the one hand and providing new impetus in healthcare production on the other? The panel discussion will refer to current study results and provide insights into the hospital sector with restrictions on the general admission of patients. It will be shown how patient admissions are organized and how helpful the instrument of free flat rates is for the individual hospitals. The outpatient sector is also discussed, where video consultations appear to be well accepted, but are also limited by regional characteristics.
The panelists were:
- Dr. Sandra Hofmann, WifOR Darmstadt, Head of Research International Social Policy
- Dr. Adam Pilny, RWI Essen, Research Associate/Principal Investigator Clinic Investments
- Dr. Gunnar Dittrich, Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Saxony, Head of Department
Moderation:
- Prof. Dr. Alexander Karmann (TU Dresden, Faculty of Business and Economics, Senior Professor of Economics)
18.03.2021: "Corona and the "V" on the financial markets"
The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has led to drastic price losses on the financial markets. The DAX30 and Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 40% of their value from the end of February to the end of March 2020. The crash was followed by a V-shaped recovery until the beginning of 2021 and price records on many markets.
Critics see this extreme volatility as an indication of the irrationality of the financial markets. In this discussion, we focus on the role of information and expectations. An attempt will be made to distinguish the negative material effects of the pandemic on companies from the coverage of the pandemic in the press and social media. In addition, the management of expectations surrounding the publication of the labour market figures in the USA is analyzed. The ECB's interventions to support the markets are discussed from a practical perspective.
The panelists were:
- Prof. Dr. Ostap Okhrin (Professor of Econometrics and Statistics, esp. in Transportation, Faculty of Transportation Sciences, TU Dresden).
- Dr. Tony Klein (Assistant Professor in Finance, Queen's Management School, Belfast)
- Jürgen Klaus (Team Lead, Funding and Investor Relations, Derivatives and Market Intelligence, European Stability Mechanism)
Moderation:
- Prof. Dr. Stefan Eichler (Professor of International Monetary Economics, Faculty of Business and Economics, TU Dresden)
