Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH)
The ZIH is responsible for the communication infrastructure of the university and operates the central IT infrastructure services and servers. In addition, as an interdisciplinary center, it supports the faculties in the processing of their tasks in research and teaching in all IT-relevant areas. To support these tasks, ZIH also carries out extensive research and development work of its own and is closely networked nationally and internationally with scientific institutions and partners from industry and business.
Since January 2021, ZIH has been one of the sites for "National High Performance Computing" (NHR). Its concept has reached the best category in the evaluation and can now be implemented. The ZIH approach as NHR center with focus on data-driven high-performance computing as well as high-performance data analytics, is based on the concept "HPC Data Analytics II". The Free State of Saxony and the federal government are providing long-term support for this investment. The total amount of funding over 10 years, including the TU Dresden's own contribution, is expected to be over 80 million euros.
The ZIH is integrated into university teaching via the Faculty of Computer Science. In addition, it offers extensive continuing education programs in the form of courses, user training and information events throughout the year. In addition, ZIH offers the possibility of a three-year vocational training to become an IT specialist with the specialization of application development.
With its concentration of expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration, ZIH is an important node in CIDS, leading the further development of innovative methods in the field of HPC, data analytics and AI throughout Germany in synergy with ScaDS.AI. As the central IT provider of the TU Dresden, ZIH develops and supports the digitalization on campus in a sustainable way. The continuous modernization and consistent further development of its standard IT services is a key factor for the workability and digital sovereignty of the TU Dresden.
