Most important IT services - An Overview

ZIH login
After a successful application to the TU Dresden you will receive a coupon ID by e-mail with which you can activate your ZIH login. To do this, redeem your coupon in the Self-Service Portal. You will be guided through a process in which you first generate a so-called 2nd factor (token for 2-factor authentication - for secure digital login to selected TU Dresden services) and then set a password. You can then view your ZIH login in the self-service portal profile. Remember your ZIH login and the password you set and have your 2nd factor to hand at all times. You should also save your coupon ID so that you can access it at any time. We recommend a separate service password for WLAN use. You set this in the password management in the Self-Service Portal (service passwords in the Self Service-Portal).
The ZIH login gives you access to the various web portals, among others:
- selma (Applicant and student portal)
- HISQIS (Portal for examination administration for certain study programmes)
- OPAL (e-learning portal)
- LSK-Online (registration for language courses)
- Datashare (Storage space for files and large e-mail attachments)
- OWA (Outlook Web App; manage your TU mailbox)
Organisational and legal information about the login is available at "Information leaflet on IT resources" and IT-Ordnung of TU Dresden.
E-mail and calendar
You will find your TU e-mail address after registration in the Self-Service Portal under "Profile". You will also find your coupon ID there, which you should keep accessible to you at all times, as you will need it if you ever need to reset your ZIH account password. You can access your Exchange mailbox worldwide via our webmailer Outlook Web App (OWA).
We recommend that you use an e-mail program on your end device to work comfortably with your mailbox. Microsoft Outlook for Windows or MacOS offers optimal support for all mailbox functions. You can obtain this program free of charge from CampusSachsen. On smartphones or tablets (Android and iOS), Exchange mailboxes can easily be set up in the standard e-mail and calendar apps. You will find corresponding instructions in our FAQ-Category E-Mail.
If required, students (not employees!) can activate e-mail forwarding to an external mailbox.
WiFi (eduroam)
In many TU Dresden buildings you can use the WLAN "eduroam". You need to register:
- Username: yourZIHlogin@tu-dresden.de
- WiFi service password (if set)
Eduroam is also available to you with these access data at many other universities in Germany and worldwide. Instructions for setting up WLAN on your mobile devices can be found in our FAQ-Category Eduroam.
Datashare and home directory
Datashare is a cloud-based Sync&Share service. Data stored in this memory can be synchronized (Sync) between different devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets or smartphones and exchanged with other people (Share). You can also edit simple text files together. However, it is not possible to recover data that is accidentally deleted from memory.
This is different for the home drive. Here you have storage space for your own files and web pages. The content is regularly backed up by our backup service. You can easily connect your home directory as a network drive (network drive address: \\vs-home.zih.tu-dresden.de\zih-login; replace zih-login with your concrete ZIH login). Here you can also share directories and files with other users. It is not possible to edit documents together.
Computer labs
The ZIH offers a public computer lab in Willers-Bau (WIL A119) and another lab in Andreas-Pfitzmann-Bau (APB E031). Both locations also offer WiFi desks. You will find an overview of the installed hardware and software on the PC-Pools page.
Further services
VPN
To use TU Dresden's IT services from home, you need a secure connection to the campus network. This is possible using a VPN connection. With a VPN connection, you can for example access the SLUB catalog databases from home.
Software (Microsoft Office, etc.)
Because of a special state-wide contract, the ZIH is able to offer the Microsoft Office suite for free. You do not have to submit any personal data to Microsoft. Detailled information about usage, registration and activation is available at https://campussachsen.tu-dresden.de. More information about student software licenses is available at software information page and student software licenses.
Printing
An external contractor provides printers on campus which you can use via WiFi or from the computer labs. Those devices also allow you to copy documents or send scans to your mailbox.
Additionally, the ZIH offers:
- PKI certificates for secure email transmission (Signatures/Encryption)
- Manuals on how to use some standard programs
- Plotting (e.g. of conference posters)
- Run batch jobs on our High Performance Computing Systems
Further information is available at the ZIH Homepage or in the alphabetical list.
