The “ZellSys – Cellular energy systems for transforming the energy supply in suburban spaces” project has been ongoing since October 2022 as part of the STARK program for supporting transition away from coal-fired power generation in traditional coal-mining regions financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
Using as an example the energy supply in the town of Wittichenau in Lusatia and its connection to the central energy supply in Hoyerswerda, this project is developing a catalog of methods for rendering energy supply systems fit for the age of renewable energy. The first step of the project involves an analysis of the current energy structure as well as economic and demographic development. Technical options will be presented in the second phase of the project. It is also important to include the people living in the region in all of these considerations. The main goal of this research and development project is to create a blueprint that can be applied to other regions in Saxony, the rest of Germany and abroad.
