Events of the Institute of Geography
The Institute of Geography at the TU Dresden offers cooperation events with Weiterdenken - Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Saxony on 29 January and 06 February 2019.
On 29 January 2019, the lecture Wo wird die AfD gewählt – und was sagt uns das? by Prof. Dr. Bernd Belina and subsequent discussion will take place:
The AfD successes in the 2017 Bundestag elections show some clear spatial patterns: higher vote shares in the East than in the West, higher in the South than in the North, higher in the countryside and in small towns than in big cities - and the best results in Saxony outside the big cities. Nevertheless, there are also exceptions to this pattern, such as AfD strongholds in some cities in the Ruhr region and in Baden-Württemberg. Prof. Belina presents these patterns using detailed maps at the level of cities and municipalities and asks how they can be explained and what follows from them.

On 06 February 2019, the lecture Neoliberaler Populismus in der Türkei und seine Krise by Ümit Akcay will take place:
Turkey was presented as a model country by the Western world in the early 2000s because it successfully adopted the neoliberal economic path and "moderate Islamist" values. In recent years, however, Turkey has been in a state of turmoil, including the failure of the so-called democratisation process and a rapid rise in authoritarianism. The lecture will focus on the reasons for the rise of the neoliberal populist model in Turkey and its recent crisis. This question will be explored by the Turkish economist Ümit Akcay. The lecture will be held in English. Translation will be provided.
