In Deutschland waren Wilhelm Stier (1799-1856) und Franz Kugler (1808-1858) zwei der ersten Gelehrten, die im 19. Jahrhundert die Architektur des Mittelalters als Gegenstand der Forschung entdeckten und in die akademische Lehre aufnahmen. Damit leisteten sie einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Etablierung und Institutionalisierung des Faches Kunstgeschichte.

Anhand ihrer Darstellungen mittelalterlicher Baukunst vergleicht der US-amerikanische Forscher Eric Garberson, ein herausragender Kenner der frühen Kunstgeschichte in Deutschland, Ausbildung sowie frühe Karrierephasen von Stier und Kugler. Beide Gelehrte waren von ähnlicher sozialer Herkunft, gingen jedoch unterschiedliche berufliche Wege. Gemeinsam ist ihnen der Wechsel von der Baupraxis in die Forschung und Lehre, bei dem ihre Frauen wichtige, aber jeweils ganz unterschiedliche Rollen spielten. Eric Garbersons Vortrag beleuchtet den Prozess der Aneignung von Wissen und Fachkompetenz und deren Übertragung in Lehre und Wissenschaft innerhalb des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Wilhelm Stier (1799-1856) and Franz Kugler (1808-1858) were two of the first scholars in nineteenth-century Germany to take up medieval architecture not just as a subject for study and publication, but also for teaching. In doing so, they made a decisive contribution to the establishment and institutionalization of the discipline of art history.

Based on their engagement with the architecture of the Middle Ages, the American researcher Eric Garberson, an outstanding scholar of early art history in Germany, compares the education and early careers of Stier and Kugler. Both were from similar social backgrounds but received significantly different training. Common to both is a shift from architectural practice to scholarship and teaching, in which their wives played important but contrasting roles. Eric Garberson’s lecture examines the process by which knowledge and expertise were acquired and their transmission in teaching and research in the 19th century.
