Project description
Project description:
Women are still heavily underrepresented in German scientific research. In addition to that, the higher one ascends in the professional hierarchy, the fewer female scientists one is going to encounter.
This imbalance is also reflected in the distribution of funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) at universities in Saxony. In this area, the targeted balance between the funding of the genders was significantly missed over the last ESF funding period (2014-2020), with about two-thirds of men funded compared to only one-third of women supported.
The Technical Universities of Dresden, Chemnitz and Freiberg as well as the Universities of Applied Sciences Mittweida and Zittau-Görlitz have appointed scientists in order to identify the reasons for the unequal gender participation in ESF funding projects using an interdisciplinary approach. Furthermore, it will be shown which of these reasons can be detected within the system of higher education institutions. The research focus extends across the ESF-funding areas of junior research groups, doctoral scholarships, and student success projects.
Based on the findings, recommendations for action will be derived to counteract the identified causes within the universities or programs. The results should help to ensure equal gender participation in future ESF-funded projects and reduce potential barriers within the system.
