Caspar David Friedrich's landscape paintings with their vibrant colors, the mysterious light of his paintings and the depiction of endless distances have had a lasting impact on our view of nature. They derive their great radiance from an airy transparency in the application of color and the magic of their nuances. In the Albertinum, his works are juxtaposed with important landscape paintings from the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister.

The Albertinum looks back and shows works by important female artists of the period around 1900: paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic art in the spirit of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and Symbolism. On display are works by Mathilde Ade, Jenny von Bary-Doussin, Marianne Fiedler, Julie Genthe, Marie Gey-Heinze, Hildegard von Mach, Emilie Mediz-Pelikan, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Cornelia Paczka-Wagner, Lilli Wislicenus-Finzelberg and Julie Wolfthorn.

The second exhibition in the newly designed Blockhaus, the Archiv der Avantgarden – Egidio Marzona (ADA) is a comprehensive presentation of visionary architectural concepts, building utopias and dystopias of the 20th century. Around 200 exhibits, including drawings, models, objects and publications, tell the story of the belief in progress as well as cautionary scepticism about life in the future.
