The Master's degree programme Sociology
Since the winter semester 2017/18, TU Dresden has been offering a new Master's programme in Sociology, developed with the participation of the students. The programme is aimed at all those who, after a Bachelor's degree in Sociology or related subjects (whether in Dresden or elsewhere), are looking to deepen, broaden and empirically substantiate their knowledge of Sociology.
The programme is consecutive and is divided into a sociological core area (60 credits) and a profile area (30 credits). The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis (30 credits) (see overview here).
The study and examination regulations for the Master's degree in Sociology (as from 2017) can be found on the website of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science (Link to the regulations).
In the sociological core area (1st and 2nd semesters), students broaden, deepen, and further focus the specialist knowledge they have acquired in the Bachelor's programme. This includes a two-semester research project. In the core area, we offer three focal areas of study:
- 'Cultures of the Modern Age'
- 'Social Inequality'
- 'Interaction and Communication'.
These focal areas can either be studied to the same extent (General studies option), or you can concentrate on one of the focal areas (Specialisation studies option).
In order to provide an easier transition for students from other study locations and related study programmes, the first semester is designed as a joint study programme for all students. Throughout this semester, students will also gain an insight into the three focal areas of study: In addition to a lecture series, they attend three research seminars ('core seminars') from the focal areas, one of which they continue as a research project in the second semester. The choice of the study option as well as of the focal area of study is made at the end of the first semester.
The profile area (3rd semester) has sociological and interdisciplinary contents and may also include an internship, if desired. Alternatively, the third semester can be used as a mobility period for studying abroad. Information on the structure of the semester and the handling of the Learning Agreements can be found here.
A booklet with information on the profile of the Institute of Sociology in research and teaching can be found here (in German).
