DSH Intensive Courses for Refugees
Table of contents
Objectives and Content
Since October 2018, intensive courses for refugees have been held at the LSK to prepare them for studying at the TU Dresden. On the one hand, the participants are prepared linguistically for the DSH exam, as passing this exam (with at least a DSH2 result) is a prerequisite for taking up a course of study. The participants' starting level must be at least B1 or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The goal of the 16-week courses is to increase the language proficiency by one level in order to be able to successfully take the DSH exam (or another entry test for university studies, e.g. TestDaF, Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule) after two courses at the latest (after successfully completing the C1 course). In addition to language preparation, intercultural training (various formats) is offered to sensitize the refugees to cultural differences and to their own cultural imprint, and to provide theoretical foundations and knowledge about dealing with other cultures, educational traditions and learning styles. As academic-oriented preparation, the participants acquire interdisciplinary skills in academic work, e.g. academic reading and writing or discussing in an academic context. In the tutorials, the participants make use of the numerous interdisciplinary offers at the TU Dresden such as special lecture series, e.g. within the framework of the Studium Generale, guest lectures, interdisciplinary workshops, etc. They will get to know the processes of studying and how to work in a academic library (SLUB).
Course Format
There are currently three intensive courses: one at B1 level, one at B2 level, and one at C1 level. All groups receive four daily lessons (45 min. each). In addition, there are two units of tutorials twice a week. Furthermore, trips, excursions, theater and cinema visits are undertaken to strengthen social cohesion and to familiarize the refugees with the cultural offerings of the city of Dresden as a component of integration.
In the summer semester 2023 (03.04.-08.09.23), a total of two German courses will be offered, namely two courses at the B2 and C1 level.
In the first half of the winter semester 2023/24 (02.10.-20.12.2023), two following German courses will be funded: one B2 as well as one C1 course (after the successfully completed B2 course in the summer semester).
Requirements
The prerequisites for participation in the courses are a school-leaving qualification with access to higher education for Germany and refugee status. In terms of language, an entry level of B1 (prerequisite for courses in April 2023) is required, which is checked with the onSet test before the course begins. The placement test takes place in the summer semester on 27.03.23.
Funding/Financing
This measure is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget passed by the members of the Saxon Parliament and it is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF).
The intensive courses are funded by the Saxon Ministry of Science and Art (Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst, SMWK) and by the DAAD as part of the Integra Program.
