Doctorate and habilitation
The Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies is fully authorised to award doctoral and habilitation degrees.
A doctorate is awarded in a procedure following the relevant specialised period of study, mainly by producing an independent academic work (thesis). The Faculty awards the academic degree of doctor philosophiae (Dr. phil.).
The procedure for acquiring a habilitation is subject to its own requirements. To be admitted for habilitation requires a degree of Doctor of Philosophy from a German academic institution and normally several years of activity in academic research and teaching. The key aspect of this qualification is producing the habilitation thesis. The faculty awards the academic degree of doctor philosophiae with habilitiation (Dr. Phil. habil.).
Since 1993, the faculty has, in accordance with § 20 of the Doctoral Regulations, traditionally awarded an honorary doctorate to persons who have made a particular contribution to science and the arts.
