At Cave 72, a small bar in Brazzaville, four friends meet regularly to discuss everything under the sun over a beer. One day, they are drawn into a

Sailors and merchants have extensive networks on land and at sea. It is therefore hardly surprising that the linguistic influence of these communities of practice extends beyond maritime and trade-related contexts.
This lecture examines this phenomenon with regard to maritime stakeholders from western France and their role in the development of North American French.
Dr. Laura Linzmeier will speak as part of the seminar “Langue et société au Québec” led by PD Dr. Franz Meier.
Guests are warmly welcome.

PD Dr. Benjamin Peter (Kiel): AI and processes of marginalization using the example of French in Acadia
Poster on the occasion of the lecture “AI and Minorization Processes Using the Example of French in Acadia” by PD Dr. Benjamin Peter (Kiel) on January 26, 2026, at the SLK Faculty of TU Dresden.
Digital language corpora—the data foundation of AI—give the impression that frequent structures represent “the” language per se, thereby marginalizing minority varieties.
Using Acadian French as an example, it becomes clear that specific Acadian features are not simply “corrected” by AI in this context, but that this process results in the invisibilization of minority varieties.
Assistant Professor Dr. Benjamin Peter will speak as part of the seminar “Langue et société au Québec” led by Privatdozent Dr. Franz Meier.
Guests are welcome.
