Why Romance Studies in Dresden
Table of contents
Good support
Here you don't just get to know your professors shortly before the exam, but are taught by them from the very first semester. You will also quickly make contact with your fellow students. The courses offered by our Research Associates and lecturers enrich the curriculum, our student advisors will support you with advice and assistance in designing your timetable and all questions relating to study and examination regulations; the tutorial program will help you with introductory courses in your subject.
Disciplinary diversity
Studying at the Institute of Romance Studies is characterized by disciplinary diversity. Like the core research areas, the course content is broadly diversified and ranges from literary, cultural and linguistic studies to didactic issues. The historical approach ranges from the early modern period to the present day. During your studies, you will therefore come into contact with early modern manuscripts and current sociolects, with Madame de Sévigné and Petrarch, but also with contemporary Italian cinema and the Grand Corps Malade, French cuisine and the Mafia. Close links between the study areas mean that the lecture on the siècle classique not only discusses 17th century literature, but also current films about this period - to name just one example...
Internationality
There have been intensive exchange relations between Dresden and the Romance cultural area since the 16th century. We continue this in our own way: a longer stay abroad is an integral part of your studies, and the Institute and Faculty offer numerous Erasmus places that take you not only to Cordoba and Granada, Montpellier and Paris, Florence and Rome, but also to La Réunion. As a student teacher, you can also gain teaching experience abroad as a foreign language assistant; through fellowships and guest lecturerships, we also offer you science all'italiana or à la française on site. Part of the Dresden Excellence Initiative are the strategic partnerships through which our Faculty is closely linked to Wroclaw in Poland and Trento in Italy. We are also committed to internationality, cosmopolitanism and tolerance.
Master's degree programs
The Master's degree programs we offer reflect this international orientation: the double Master's program Dresden-Trento is the result of a cooperation between our local Faculty SLK and the Dipartimento di Lettere e Filosofia of the Università degli Studi di Trento. It enables you to study in both cities and to graduate not only with a German but also with an Italian Master's degree. If you not only want to acquire academic knowledge and intercultural competence, but also want to take a transdisciplinary approach to your studies and gain practical project experience, you may be interested in the interdisciplinary Master's degree program in European Languages (EUROS), which enables you to acquire an additional foreign language and in-depth linguistic knowledge. The consecutive Master's degree course in Literature and Societal Change (LiKwa), which draws on the cultural and literary studies courses offered by the Faculty of SLK, is also transdisciplinary.
Practical relevance
The Italy Center and the Center France | Francophonie with the Observatory of Contemporary Cultures are contact points for international academic exchange, but also for numerous high-profile events. Here we organize not only lectures, but also readings, film series and exhibitions and invite authors, film directors and artists - often in cooperation with Dresden's museums, cinemas or literature houses. Personal initiative and active participation are expressly encouraged. In addition to your regular studies, you can acquire region-specific additional qualifications in the fields of society, politics, history, culture and economics of Hispanic America and Brazil through the free additional course in Latin American Regional Studies.
The location
Dresden is located exactly between Berlin and Prague, which is why both the German and the Czech metropolis can be easily reached in just two hours by bus or train. Dresden itself is large enough to offer a wide range of cultural activities and countless nightlife options, but small enough not to get lost and get to know people. Elbflorenz also offers fantastic surroundings.
