The sub-subject Romance Studies can be chosen as the first or second sub-subject in the Bachelor's degree program at the Faculty SLK. Please see here for the possible subject combinations.
The Romance Studies sub-subject in the Bachelor's degree program in Language, Literature and Cultural Studies has a focus on French or Italian. A specialization is chosen at the beginning of the degree course and retained throughout the rest of the Bachelor's degree course. In addition, students have the option of taking a module in the other specialization (e.g. from the field of Italian in the case of the French specialization) or the Spanish Philology module in the complementary module in the 3rd year of study.
Knowledge at level B1 is required in the French specialization and at level A1 in the Italian specialization. Students with no knowledge of Italian can still begin their studies with a major in Italian: In this case, an additional course is offered in the first semester. For further information on language skills in French and Italian, see under
Language skills at the start of studies'.
The Romance Studies sub-discipline is structured as follows:
a) Specialized studies
- Linguistics
- Literary Studies
- cultural studies

- Basic module in French and Italian cultural studies
- French language practice B2.1.1 and B2.1.2 or Italian language practice A2 and B1.1

3rd academic year
Students choose one of the areas of linguistics or literary and cultural studies for the specialization module. In the complementary module, they can choose from numerous options, including a module on Spanish philology. In the language practice module, students focus on optimizing their oral and written expression in the chosen language.

In Romance Studies, a stay abroad in a French- or Italian-speaking country of at least 5 or 10 weeks is compulsory. For further information: see FAQ/partial subject Romance Studies.
