Abstract
Surfaces with microstructures observed in the world show specific functions, for example, hierarchical surface structures on Lotus leaf exhibit superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties.
In the inGRAVE project, three-dimensional and hierarchical microstructures will be designed and fabricated on organic films aiming at achieving well-defined multifunctions, such as self-cleaning, anti-icing, decorative, and aesthetic properties. The chair LMO and the SWG are pursuing a novel one-step structuring technique by using laser engraving and hot embossing processes to directly fabricate hierarchical and multifunctional microstructured organic films.
Engraving process based on direct laser interference pattern (DLIP) technology is developed to produce hierarchical geometric structures on the surface of seamless embossing metallic cylinder. DLIP is one of the most effective techniques to fabricate periodic microstructured patterns on surfaces with high quality and throughout, which is extremely attractive to industry.
Next, corresponding hierarchical structures on the cylinder surface are directly imprinted into target polymers through roll-to-roll hot embossing technique. By exploring appropriate structuring processes, functional structures can be imprinted on large areas in highly-efficient and continuous processes to meet industrial needs.
