Fly-in in Kamenz: Our new DA62MPP research aircraft takes off!
The commissioning of TU Dresden’s research aircraft, the DA62MPP
Yesterday was finally the day: the Aerospace Engineering (Chair of Aircraft Engineering) and the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at TU Dresden celebrated the official fly-in of our new Diamond Diamond DA62MPP research aircraft at Kamenz Airport. Numerous guests from the worlds of science, politics and industry, as well as media representatives, were on hand to give the new ‘flying real-world laboratory’ a fitting welcome.
With the ceremonial inauguration of the Diamond DA62MPP, TU Dresden is setting a groundbreaking milestone for research into the climate-friendly transformation of aviation. Procured jointly by the ILR and ILK through a demanding process, the twin-engine aircraft will serve as a versatile research platform in future.
Flying real-world laboratory for hydrogen propulsion and sensor technology
Future flight tests will focus, among other things, on testing alternative propulsion systems. For example, the plan is to replace one of the conventional engines with a pioneering electric motor powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. Thanks to the integration of data acquisition computers and numerous hardpoints for external sensors, the aircraft (which has room for two pilots and two flight engineers) also offers excellent conditions as a sensor platform – not only for aeronautical engineering, but also for cooperation partners in environmental and climate research.
Major media coverage
There is enormous public interest in our research aircraft as a flying real-world laboratory. Yesterday’s fly-in in Kamenz attracted a large number of media representatives, which is reflected in extensive coverage in regional and national newspapers as well as online portals.

We would like to thank all project partners, guests and the entire team who made this successful event possible!
Funded by Europe and the Free State of Saxony: The ‘FoFlu’ procurement project lays the foundation for cutting-edge research in the region.
The aircraft was purchased as part of the FoFlu project (Flying Test Laboratory for Fossil-Free Propulsion Systems), financed by European Union subsidies and tax revenues based on the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament (Sächsische Aufbaubank – SAB).
