Spur gears and gearboxes typically connect drive and driven machines with their positive transmission of torque and rotational speed. Gears are used in almost all areas, from clockwork gears to heavy machinery. Due to their robustness and high efficiency, they are the first choice for direct mechanical transmission. Although intensive research on spur gears has been carried out since the 19th century, not all aspects of spur gears are fully covered. In addition to the topics of geometry and load-bearing capacity, the demands on noise behaviour and the use of new materials are the main subjects of today's scientific investigations.
