Forming of fiber-based materials
Forming methods of fiber-based materials are challenging because of their complex material behaviour. The research aims to support the development and market launch of sustainable packaging solutions, which more and more allow for recycling of the applied materials.
Recent research projects focus on the development of processes, materials, machine and test equipment as well as simulations.
Examples are:
- Surface and print guarding during 3D-forming
- Modification of paperboard for best formability
- Investigation of paper based composites with barrier layers in the forming process
- Development of a tribometer (tribologic test equipment) for tribologic optimization of forming systems
- Development of test rig for ultrasonic enhanced forming of fiber-based materials
- Development of a self-improving cup forming system for fiber-based materials
Forming process of macro algae foils
Algae film is a novel bio-based material. As part of a feasibility study, a process was developed to produce 3D-formed cups. The focus is on the interaction of material properties, mold design and process control.
The research is carried out in a laboratory scale on different forming methods such as deep drawing, press forming and embossing of fibre based materials. The objective evaluation of the forming quality of the samples is essential for the scientific investigation of the influencing variable of the forming process though challenging for the measurement equipment. Test devices for the stability and optical quality of the flange area of cups are developed, which provide reliable and reproducible characteristic values. Microscopic imaging can reveal structural changes and defects.
