Air-cushion-paper – Development of a novel, environmentally friendly packaging material and a corresponding manufacturing process
The novel packaging law (VerpackG) with new regulations for better material cycles was activated in 2019. Therefore, in the packaging-industry there is a stronger focus on plastic material alternatives like paper or cardboard. The structure of fiber-based materials is appropriate for high stiffness at low weight and fulfills different requirements of many types of primary packaging. Lightweight web-shaped cushioning products with hollow structures, produced and offered in the form of rolls or sheets, are a big market in the packaging industry. Here, the plastic bubble wrap plays the most important role. Today, there is no cushioning material made of paper/cardboard that is comparable to the structural design of bubble wrap.
Therefore, a novel, environmentally friendly packaging material, named “air-cushion-paper” was developed at the Technical University of Dresden, which is based on the structural design of conventional bubble wrap. To produce the air-cushion-paper, a novel multi-compression drawing unit should form continuously a large number of equally sized cavities in the paper/cardboard material.
The aim of the planned ZIM cooperation project is the development of the air-cushion-paper as a cushion material for packaging and a corresponding manufacturing process.
