As part of the Seventh Framework Program (FP7), the European Commission has set itself the goal of strengthening the pioneering role of European industry by funding collaborative projects.
Among other things, funding is being provided for the introduction of automated, large-scale manufacturing processes for fiber-reinforced composite components.
The Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology at the TUD Dresden University of Technology (ITM) is participating, together with several European partners, in two forward-looking projects within FP7.
In April 2011, the EU project “3DLightTrans—Large-scale manufacturing technology for high-performance lightweight 3D multifunctional composites” was launched, focusing on the further development of pleating and multilayer weaving technologies for composites. The ITM is contributing its many years of experience in the development and implementation of manufacturing processes for the production of textile semi-finished products that meet specific requirements and feature a high degree of prefabrication.
A second EU project under the Seventh Framework Program, “MAPICC 3D—One-shot Manufacturing on a Large Scale of 3D Upgraded Panels and Stiffeners for Lightweight Thermoplastic Textile Composite Structures,” began in December 2011. This project focuses on the further development of multi-layer knitting technology.
