As part of the Seventh Framework Program (FP7), the European Commission has set itself the goal of strengthening the pioneering role of European industry by promoting collaborative projects. Among other things, the introduction of automated, large-scale production processes for fiber composite components is being promoted. The Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology at TUD Dresden University of Technology (ITM) is involved in two pioneering projects within FP7 together with several European partners.
The EU project "3DLightTrans - Large scale manufacturing technology for high performance lightweight 3D multifunctional composites", which focuses on the further development of pleated and multilayer weaving technology for composites, was launched in April 2011. The ITM is contributing its many years of experience in the development and implementation of manufacturing processes for the realization of textile semi-finished products with a high degree of prefabrication in line with requirements.
A second EU project under the Seventh Framework Programme "MAPICC 3D - One-shot Manufacturing on large scale of 3D up graded panels and stiffeners for lightweight thermoplastic textile composite structures" was launched in December 2011. This project focuses on the further development of multi-layer knitting technology.
