What you can expect
Since its foundation in 1959, the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion has been the most important European research and testing facility for liquid chemical rocket engines. On the 51-hectare site, 25 kilometers north-east of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg, a place of modern engine development has emerged from historical roots. The Satellite and Orbital Propulsion Department of the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion is researching and developing new, advanced rocket propellants – so-called green propellants – that will enable more environmentally friendly, safer and more cost-effective space travel in the future. Highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been identified as one of the most promising green storable rocket propellants, and there is currently a great deal of interest in its additional use as a cooling fluid in regeneratively cooled space propulsion systems. In order to investigate the fundamental applicability of this rocket fuel as such a cooling fluid in more detail, investigations are to be carried out in our institute’s own physical-chemical laboratory as part of a student thesis (Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis). The kinetic parameters of the decomposition reaction of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide are to be determined using the method of differential scanning calorimetry .
Tasks
- Familiarization with the use of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide as a cooling fluid in regeneratively cooled space propulsion systems
- Familiarization with the topic of differential scanning calorimetry
- Preparation and execution of test series in the physical-chemical laboratory
- Evaluation of the test series carried out with regard to the determination of kinetic parameters
- documentation
What we expect from you
- Student of chemistry, chemical engineering or a similar field of study (f/m/d)
- Structured and independent way of working
- Work experience in a laboratory desirable
- Previous knowledge in the field of reaction kinetics advantageous
Our offer
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees in their personal and professional environment. Our numerous training and development opportunities are available to you for this purpose. Equal opportunities are particularly important to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. We give preference to applications from severely disabled people if they are professionally qualified.

What you can expect
The Institute of Space Propulsion combines all research and test operation activities for rocket propulsion systems. The Department of Chemical Propellant Technology is particularly concerned with new, better and more environmentally friendly propellants for future rocket engines. Among other things, hydrogen peroxide is being investigated as a possible oxygen carrier in combination with a suitable fuel. In one of our research projects, such fuels are microencapsulated and thus made miscible and storable with the oxidizer. As part of the student work (e.g. final thesis or internship), microencapsulated fuels are to be produced, characterized and further developed for possible use in rocket engines.
What we expect from you
- familiarization with the chemistry of (microencapsulated) rocket propellants
- Synthesis and characterization of microcapsules
- Optimization of the ignition properties of microencapsulated propellants with regard to space applications
- Documentation and evaluation of the results
- Degree in chemistry or a related natural science is an advantage
- Experience of working in a chemical laboratory desirable
- Independent and structured way of working helpful

PhD Projects and Research Associates
Job Offers (Student Assistant / Senior Student Assistant)
The position will be held jointly at the Institute of Resource Ecology (http://www.hzdr.de/FWR) and the Institute of Radiation Physics (http://www.hzdr.de/FWK) at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, research center (P.O. Box 510119, 01314 Dresden).
Context: Production of electricity by nuclear power plants inevitably generates high-level and long-lived radioactive waste. A solution considered by several nuclear waste management agencies is to store them into deep underground repositories. The principle of such a concept is to provide a multi-barrier system to avoid the release of the radioactive waste through the biosphere for very long time scales (up to hundred thousand of years). It is thus of great importance to be able to characterize both at a macroscopic and a molecular level the different processes (retention, reduction, surface precipitation, etc.) that can take place onto mineral surfaces and thus affect the availability and the mobility of the radionuclides. This information can be inserted in surface complexation models for the description and prediction over a long time-scale of the interaction of pollutants at the solid/liquid interface with several sorbent surfaces. These surface complexation models rely on a thermodynamic description of the solid/water interface and represent a geochemically robust and sound approach to quantify adsorption equilibria.
Aim of the study: The solution of adsorption equilibria problems can be reached via Gibbs Free Energy Minimization and/or Law of Mass Action. Standard procedures apply commonly used geochemical software such as FITEQL/PHREEQC coupled to shell optimizers (UCODE, PEST). They are nevertheless subject to numerical instability and/or convergence problems, and to the risk to fall into a local minimum region rather than a global optimum valley. This risk is drastically increased when the number of adjustable parameters becomes higher than 3 or 4. Also the “trial and error” approach within the numerical fitting data can become very fast time consuming.
Thus, the objective of the present work are i) to develop alternative approaches to enable the handling of a high number of adjustable parameters at once, ii) the speed up of the optimizing procedure in order to reduce the time required for the user to reach a satisfactory description of the experimental data.
Specific tasks
- Implement a genetic algorithm coupled to Levenberg-Marquardt optimization on a high performance computing cluster,
- Compare the results of with another optimization path, namely Downhill Simplex,
- Find reliable ways to provide realistic uncertainties of the adjustable parameters (e.g. scale sensitivity, Monte-Carlo, etc.)
This internship or assistant position can be used as a basis for a follow-up Research Project, Bachelor or Master thesis.
Requirements
Good knowledge in python programming and standard optimization routines (Newton Raphson, Levenberg-Marquardt, etc.) is mandatory. Students without knowledge in chemistry are also encouraged to apply. Very good English skills are appreciated.
