PhD Projects and Research Associates
You will soon have completed your Master’s thesis in chemistry and are looking for the next exciting challenge? Would you like to go abroad, but not forever? Then this PhD position is just right for you:
As part of the international Research Training Group Optexc – Optical Excitations in Organic and Inorganic Semiconductors (DFG-funded, a joint project of the University of Melbourne, the University of Bayreuth and Monash University) we are looking for a
doctoral student in the field of "Responsive Soft Materials"
The research focuses on active emulsion droplet systems with switchable internal structures and exciting optical properties. These structures respond to external stimuli such as light, electric fields or chemical signals – with applications ranging from microlenses to chemical and biological sensors.
Key questions of the project include how energy transfer and charge separation at liquid-liquid interfaces can be efficiently controlled. The aim is to make light-sensitive emulsions usable as photonic tools and waveguides for sensor technology, photocatalysis, energy storage or optical displays.
The project is part of an established, international network with excellent support and infrastructure. The main supervision is provided jointly by Lukas Zeininger (University of Melbourne) and Johannes Brendel (University of Bayreuth).
Prerequisites:
A completed Master’s degree in chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer science or related disciplines. In addition: very good English language skills, ability to work in a team, independence and creativity.
The program offers:
- Planned start: February 2026 (in Melbourne)
- Duration: 3.5 years; research stays at both locations (at least 1 year at each location), regular exchanges
- Joint degree: Dual degree – PhD (Melbourne) & Dr. rer. nat. (Bayreuth)
- Funding: Scholarship, travel expenses and tuition fees are fully covered
