Summer school AMBS: Architectural Math for Bamboo Structures
From 10 to 22 July 2023, the international summer school "Architectural Math for Bamboo Structures" (AMBS) will take place at Technische Universität Dresden under the direction of Prof. Daniel Lordick. During this time, around 20 participants, including young scientists and artists from all over the world, will initially work together in small interdisciplinary groups to develop design projects. The focus of the first week will be on mathematical basics and digital design methods. In the second week, the acquired knowledge will be put into practice. Under the guidance of experts in building with bamboo, the participants will realise an examplary design of a bamboo sculpture called "La Fleur Mathématique". The sculpture will be prefabricated in the workshop and finally transported in segments to Pillnitz. There it will be assembled and erected in the palace park and inaugurated on 21 July for the opening of the "Design Campus". Until October 2023, it will be open to the public and visitors to the palace and park. "We hope that this will make a public contribution to the topic of science and art and we even want to increase this effect in the long term through the film documentation of the Summer School," explains Prof. Lordick.
The Summer School will be flanked by impulse lectures on the topics of construction and bionics as well as visits to local research institutes and cultural institutions in Dresden.
With the motto "Bend it like Dini!", the summer school is dedicated to Ulisse Dini, an Italian mathematician from Pisa (1845-1918) who gave his name to the so-called Dini surface. The surface with constant negative curvature and characteristic surface curves is
exemplary with regard to certain geometric properties, which are useful for the economical production of efficient and lightweight load-bearing structures.
The Dini surface will serve as the basis for the design of the sculpture made of bamboo poles. Bamboo was chosen as a suitable material in particular because of its sustainability and structural load-bearing capacity.
The summer school is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the SPP 2187. Additional funding is made possible by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
