Miriam Fritsch (Ruhr-Universität Bochum): The PANDA experiment at FAIR

The PANDA experiment is part of the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at Darmstadt, Germany. It will be the main experiment at FAIR addressing the field of hadron physics and will use the antiproton beam of the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR). Antiproton-proton reactions in the energy range of medium energies (ECM = 2-5 GeV) provide a perfect laboratory for investigating the still open questions in hadron physics.
One of these questions is: Do hadrons exist which have different internal structure beside ordinary mesons and baryons, such as multiquark states, hydrids or glueballs without quarks at all. First candidates of multiquarks states were already found, however, the interpretation is still ongoing and several theoretical groups provide various models for it. In order to judge which of the models might be the truth further measurements are necessary. For this the charm and charmonium region is an ideal laboratory where states are much narrower than in the light quark sector and therefore the overlapping and interference among the states is reduced. Thus, the main topics of the PANDA physics program are the search for new and predicted states in the charm sector and the precise measurement of the line shape of new and already discovered resonances, e.g. the X(3872). This will be done by using the energy scan method for measuring the line shape very precisely and by the determination of the quantum numbers.
Beside PANDA and FAIR, it will also be presented how these kind of measurements will be performed.
