Further explanations for Master’s Thesis
According to PO §19 (1,2), the Master’s Thesis should demonstrate that a student is able to work independently on a research problem using scientific methods within a pre-determined time period.
The Master’s thesis can be supervised by a professor or other authorized examiner (according to the Saxon Higher Education Act, e.g. a Junior Professor, Lecturer, etc.) who is member of the Physics Department at the Technische Universität Dresden. Students have a right to propose the second reviewer of the thesis, which may be a member of the above group, but may also be a member of a different institution or university who has the right to teach physics. The exact requirements for the reviewer’s credentials can be found in the “Leitfaden des Prüfungsausschusses” (Guide of the Examination Committee ). If the Master’s Thesis will be supervised by an authorized person outside of TU-Dresden’s Physics Department or if the second reviewer teaches in another field, adjacent to physics, a special application to the Examination Committee is required. The purpose of this regulation is to ensure that the supervisor/reviewer is thoroughly familiar with the organization, expectations and conventions of the 1-year research phase in the Master of Physics programme.
The start of the Master’s Thesis can be determined, in consultation with the supervisor, for, in principle, any date, with the restriction that it begin within 1 month after the completion of the final module examination (usually the defense of the module "Research Practice", Phy-Ma-Warb). The approval of the thesis topic is carried out by the Examination Committee at the request of the student using a form that is distributed simultaneously with the appointment of the defense date for the “Research Practice” module by the Examinations office. If the student does not expresses a desire to change research topics (e.g. either a change of subject matter or a change of supervisor, which must be done in consultation with the targeted Master’s Thesis supervisor) within 1 month of the final module examination, the Examination Committee automatically assigns the same topic and supervisor for the Master’s Thesis as for the “Research Practice”. The start of the Master’s Thesis is only possible after successfully finishing the “Research Practice” module.
The working time for the Master’s Thesis is 26 weeks, in accordance with §26 PO. In extenuating cases, the working time can be extended by up to a maximum of 6 weeks, for justified requests.
