Admission requirements
— Completed university degree program, in which linguistic and/or language teaching skills have been acquired
— Fundamental knowledge of linguistics and/or German as a foreign or second language with respect to current linguistic research positions, theories and contemporary methods of quantitative and/or qualitative analysis
— English proficiency (B2) and, if the “Language Diversity” track is chosen, proficiency in one of the following languages: Italian, Polish, Czech, Russian, Spanish, French, Sorbian, Latin, Greek
— An assessment interview

The participation in an aptitude assessment or selection procedure is a prerequisite for enrollment in this degree program. Please note that the deadline for submitting an application may be earlier than the application deadlines for the degree program (see above under application deadlines). International applicants and German applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification are kindly advised to read the requirements for German-language courses.
Notes on the application process
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. General information about the degree program
The aim of the Master's program in European Languages (EuroS) is to provide academic qualification in the field of linguistics. Depending on the chosen specialization in structural, historical or usage-related aspects of European languages or in the field of German as a foreign and second language, students will acquire the skills to systematically analyze European languages.
Students will learn about methods for the linguistic analysis of texts and gain skills to promote and evaluate learning processes associated with foreign and second language acquisition. They will also gain the capacity understand European languages in regional, national and transnational contexts and to make comparisons between languages and language families. Students will be able to recognize case-related and theoretical spaces, transformation and transfer processes, structures and pragmatics of European languages as well as to analyze them using scientific methods.
Study contents
The course content includes core areas of European linguistics in an interdisciplinary context, language area research, language change, language systematics, communicative action and linguistic and cultural transfer, language acquisition and language teaching, as well as the analysis of translingual processes in accordance with the concepts of linguistic observation represented in the subject-specific traditions of English and American Studies, German Studies, German as a Foreign and Second Language, Romance Studies, Slavic Studies, Classical Philology. Students can also choose to learn foreign languages from the Romance language family (e.g. French, Italian, Spanish), Slavic language family (e.g. Polish, Russian, Czech, Sorbian) and classical languages (Latin, Greek). In the “Language Diversity” track, students acquire an additional foreign language as part of the Master’s degree program. In the “Language Theory” track, students consolidate their theoretical knowledge on a current scientific level and expand their methodological skills for quantitative and/or qualitative research on linguistic subjects.
Stay abroad
In the third semester, a stay at either another domestic or an international university amounting to 300 hours is compulsory.

Mandatory internship during studies
In the third semester, a stay at either another domestic or an international university amounting to 300 hours is compulsory.
