New international cooperation with Columbia University (New York) for students
The Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden was accepted into the ICEP program (International Collaboration and Exchange Program) of Columbia University (New York, USA) for the first time this year. The program was initiated by the Rector of TU Dresden, Prof. Ursula Staudinger, and is an important platform for medical students for international exchange and collaboration with 38 universities from 23 countries. Normally, students can qualify for a PhD after successfully participating in the two-semester ICEP program. Due to the first-time participation, however, the Faculty of Medicine was also given the opportunity to directly award bilateral doctoral places in cooperation with Columbia University.
The response from students was great. Numerous students went through the selection process according to Columbia University's strict criteria, including an interview. In the end, three outstanding candidates were selected for a twelve-month research project at Columbia University: Kim Becker (model degree program) will conduct research in the field of diabetes under the guidance of Prof. Karsten Kretschmar (CRTD) and Prof. Remi Creusot (Columbia University), while Tim Lempfer (model degree program) will specialize in cancer immunology in the laboratory of Prof. Marc Schmitz (Institute of Immunology TUD) and Prof. Emanuel Zorn (Columbia University). Max Boeck (regular degree program) will focus on transplantation under the supervision of Prof. Barbara Ludwig (MK3) and Prof. Greg Nowak (Columbia University). In addition, Clara Thürmel (model degree program) and Katharina Schmidt (regular degree program) have been selected for the online-based ICEP program.
This cooperation will be promoted and further developed in the coming years with the great support of Prof. Esther Troost, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Peggy Gierschner, International Affairs Advisor, and Anette Wu, Associate Professor at Columbia University.
"We are very pleased for our students about this special cooperation and will closely support their academic and personal development. We wish all the selected students every success," says Prof. Esther Troost.
"It's a great achievement that three students from the pilot course have made it onto the ICEP program! We are excited to see what knowledge and experience the young colleagues will return from the USA with," says Prof. Dr. Martin Wolz, Medical Director of Chemnitz Hospital.
