University brew needs support: The second funding campaign until 2023 has begun
This is the title of the current issue of the alumni magazine “Kontakt-Online”, which discusses Germany’s first university brewery. It opened in May 2019, four years after two TUD professors decided to buy a brewing plant. This wasn’t just for fun – they developed a new internship offer and set up a laboratory there. Since then, they have two types of beer on the market.
The “Lohrmanns Brew” would like to produce its beer itself in the heart of Dresden – in Kraftwerk Mitte -, start direct sales and make its dream of becoming a brewing center a reality. The pandemic has put a spanner in the works, but the team firmly believes in its mission and is therefore asking for support in its crowdfunding campaign. The first funding goal was achieved at the end of October – also thanks to many alumni! The fermentation tanks and large equipment can be moved to the basement when the time comes, and there will be a party to celebrate its opening. Now it’s time for the second step: 250,000€ are to be collected over the next few years in order to purchase the building for the brewing plant, as well as to gradually expand the “beer hotspot” at Kraftwerk Mitte.
“Beer unites” is the motto, and with it they hope to find supporters. They will help to ensure that Germany’s first university beer can once again be brewed in-house. “In our own brewery – including beer garden – we want to bring science and craft together, create a place for interaction, and transport the concentrated knowledge and many innovations of the university to the city. A beer with university depth, so to speak.”
