General information about the degree program
A transition from fossil energy carriers to energy provided by renewable and CO2 neutral energy sources is required. The study programme in Renewable Energy Systems deals with this necessity as well as the trend towards local and distributed energy generation.
The study programme focuses on the analysis of various technologies for the use of renewable energy sources (solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, geothermal energy, biomass, energy biotechnology and hydropower) as well as on the design and assessment of complex energy systems. Following a system approach, the programme further deals with the conversion of energy from renewable sources into power and thermal energy as well as with the distribution and storing of energy.
At the TU Dresden, the study programme in Renewable Energy Systems is an integrated five-year (single-tier) programme leading to a Diplom degree. The programme thus includes the Bachelor as well as the Master level. The Diplom degree (Dipl.-Ing.) is equivalent to the Master’s degree.
The programme consists of a four-semester basic study period and a six-semester advanced study period, including a 20-week internship in industry as well as the Diplom thesis semester.
During the basic study period, the students learn the fundamentals of mathematics, natural sciences, computer science, electrical engineering, automation engineering and mechanical engineering.
During the advanced study period, the students attend mandatory modules from the fields of power electronics, electrical machines, process thermodynamics, energy economics, high voltage and high current engineering as well as fluid energy machines. Furthermore, students can choose elective modules from the following areas: solarthermics, geothermics, wind/water, biomass, networks and grids, hydrogen and energy efficiency.
