General information for the course
The English and American Studies program at TU Dresden analyzes anglophone cultures, English literature and the English language. In addition to the academic studies in the subject areas, students receive in-depth practical language training conducted by highly qualified lecturers. Students enrolled in teacher training programs additionally pursue studies in didactics. Thanks to the academic breadth of the Chairs covering both English and American Studies, students can choose their specialization according to their interests. The research and teaching focuses of English and American Studies at TU Dresden include popular culture, masculinity studies, television studies, gender studies, and (postcolonial) varieties of English. Moreover, regular guest lectures at the Institute, Chairs with particular research focuses and lectures with a strong methodical approach offer a wide range of individual development opportunities.
Study contents
In the sub-discipline of English and American Studies, students will apply their excellent command of the English language as a basis to acquire an overview of the language, culture and literature of Great Britain and North America as well as other English-speaking countries. The program includes specialized modules and independent study of basic academic methods. In English Studies, the overview ranges from the medieval beginnings to the present. American Studies ranges from colonial beginnings to the present.
Students acquire broad, fundamental knowledge and specialize in one of the following fields:
— Linguistics
— British Studies
— North American Studies
This enables students to describe, reflect on and explain complex linguistic, cultural, and literary topics, mechanisms and structures.
By the time students submit their Bachelor’s theses, they must provide evidence of having stayed in an English-speaking country for a least 5 weeks.
Modules:
1st year
Students visit three foundation modules and complete the language practice module:
— Fundamentals of Linguistics
— Fundamentals of Literature
— Fundamentals of Cultural Studies
— Language Practice 1: Language Components
2nd year
Students select one of the areas studied in the first year for specialization module 1 as well as a course from another area for the complementary module 1. Students systematically refine their language skills and proficiency in the language practice module:
— Specialization 1
— Complementary module 1
— Language practice 2: Language Skills
3rd year
Students choose to specialize in either Linguistics, British Studies or North American Studies in specialization module 2. Complementary module 2 entails taking a course from another field of study:
— Specialization 2
— Complementary module 2
— Language practice 3: Language Creativity
Students must also write a Bachelor’s thesis if English/American Studies is their first sub-discipline. They have a period of eight weeks for this. The topic of the thesis is usually based on a subject from the specialization module.
