General information for the course

Studying History in Dresden imparts skills that span epochs, to recognize historical questions and problems using academic methods, to analyze these, and to find solutions and weigh up alternative interpretations. The program enables students to pursue in-depth studies of individual epochs and systems, from ancient history to contemporary history, from the history of technology to the history of Saxony. The program includes practical work experience and is embedded in a rich cultural and academic landscape – both in Dresden and through international and interdisciplinary research associations and networks.

Studying History in Dresden provides a framework for a systematic professional historical education and for students to choose their own concentrations. It is enriched directly by teaching provided at the Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarianism Studies, the Institut für Sächsische Geschichte und Volkskunde (Institute for Saxon History and Folklore), the Research Center for the Comparative History of Religious Orders, as well as teaching collaborations with museums and archives in Dresden.

Study contents

Studies in the core area of history imparts fundamental knowledge that spans epochs and provides an exemplary introduction to the issues, working techniques, methods and theories of history.

An introduction to the study of history:
— Disciplines and working methods: acquisition of fundamental skills for the independent acquisition of historical knowledge and development of skills in historical thinking and reflection using historical research literature
— Concepts, historical methods: acquisition of fundamental skills for the independent acquisition of historical knowledge and development of skills in historical thinking and reflection using historical source materials

Introduction to historical epochs and systems:
— Ancient and medieval history: acquisition of orientation knowledge in lectures
— Modern history: acquisition of orientation knowledge in lectures
— Systematics: acquisition of orientation knowledge in lectures (history of Saxony, history of technology and science)

Consolidating foundation knowledge:
— Ancient and medieval history: consolidation in seminars and student work groups
— Modern history: consolidation in seminars and student work groups
— Systematics: consolidation in seminars and student work groups

Consolidating foundation knowledge within the context of research: consolidation in seminars and student work groups, ideally in the special field later chosen as the subject of the BA thesis

Additional topics and epochs:
— Ancient and medieval history: consolidation of knowledge and skills in lectures and practicals
— Modern history: consolidation of knowledge and skills in lectures and practicals
