General information for the course

Protestant Theology investigates Christianity as an essential element of various world cultures. As a religion with its roots in Judaism and 2,000 years of history, Christianity has shaped politics, culture, and society.

Protestant Theology researches the origins, historical context, and theological diversity of Christianity and its cultural characteristics throughout time. The significance of biblical teachings and theological ideas for today is always central to this. Theology employs a wide range of historical, philological, hermeneutic and sociological methods and reflects on the ways God speaks to us in modernity.

Protestant Theology can be studied as a 1^st or 2^nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program.

Study contents

The study of Protestant Theology comprises the following sub-disciplines, each of which has its own methodological requirements and pursues different systematic interests: Biblical Theology delves into Biblical principles (Old and New Testaments) using philological, literary and historical methods.

At TU Dresden, the focus lies on researching the New Testament with the inclusion of digital methods in exegesis. Language proficiency (Greek) required for this is taught at the beginning of the course. Church history investigates the cultural characteristics of Christianity throughout time while keeping an eye on political, social, and historical theological issues. One focus is on the history of the Reformation. Language proficiency (Latin) required for this is taught during the course. Systematic Theology examines how certain Christian content can be expressed and gain meaning in the present day. One focus is on exploring current ethical issues (technology and bioethics, artificial intelligence etc.). As part of practical theology, religious education studies examines whether and how religious content can be conveyed. The theoretical reflection of learning and teaching processes takes into account not only the content from all sub-disciplines, but also specific scenarios and learning requirements.
