Archiving research data
Archiving is the term used when data is to be stored securely and independently of the data source for a longer period of time. They are copied at the ZIH to a long-term storage facility. The original data can then be deleted.
Archiving - Why?
The long-term archiving of research data is a prerequisite for the traceability of scientific results. Both the DFG (guidelines for safeguarding good scientific practice) and the TU Dresden (guidelines for safeguarding good scientific practice, for avoiding scientific misconduct and for dealing with violations) require research data to be stored for at least 10 years. Publishing the data also allows the data to be reused or viewed in a new scientific context.
Archiving involves copying data or different versions of data that are to be stored permanently and securely for a certain period of time to a long-term storage facility. The original data can then be deleted.
As part of research work or research projects, all important data should be archived at the end of the project.
The ZIH currently offers two archiving systems:
- to HPC intermediate archive
Archiving of data that is to be stored for project durations (approx. 3 years).
- to Long-term Archiving
OpARA (Open Access Repository and Archive) for the long-term storage of research data.
Scope of Service
Backup
-
Data loss, via hardware failure or operating error, is compensated through the recovery of data from the backup
Intermediate Archive
- Long-term storage of project data worthy of being archived (during project running time)
- Data storage in many copies
Long-Term Archiving
- Safe, long-term storage of data worthy of being archived
- Data storage in many copies
Options
Backup
- Backup times and cycles selectable in consultation (for example storage weekly or twice daily)
- Adjustable storage time of data
- Expansion of capacity for external clients by application
Backup
- Authorized users:
