Central Data Storage

The ZIH provides all members of the TU Dresden with centralized data storage in the form of network drives or storage services. This storage can be accessed using various methods at the workplace or via mobile devices. Depending on service, security, and availability requirements, redundant systems and limited capacities are offered.

Home drive

Home drives are personal storage areas for data and are automatically made available to all members of the TU Dresden community. Initially, 20 GB of storage space is reserved; this quota can be increased to up to 200 GB for employees and up to 50 GB for students. The stored data is automatically protected against data loss by snapshots. The public_html subdirectory of the home drive is intended for users’ personal websites.

Shared storages

Shared storages are a central data storage facility at TUD, designed specifically to facilitate collaboration between staff members.

Home and project directories on high-performance computers

Home and project directories on high-performance computers are similar in function to central home drives or shared storages, but with the restriction that they are available exclusively for use on the high-performance computers.

Central Data Gateway

The data gateway “dgw.zih.tu-dresden.de” is a central file server that provides access to all home directories and group drives for organising data. Access is via the SSH methods “sshfs”, “sftp” or “scp”.
Please note: Group drives on the SVM ceph-smb are not available on the data gateway!

Using suitable file explorers, you can establish a connection to the data gateway, and using the two-window technique, you can copy or move data as required between the local system and the directories on the data gateway.

Datashare

• Cloud-based storage for Sync&Share.
• Data stored in this cloud can be synchronised (Sync) across different devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets or smartphones, and shared with other people (Share).

Backup

Regular backups are made from central storage systems to the tape-based backup systems.
