INVITATION TO THE KICK-OFF OF "Pic2Bridge"
On November 12, 2024, the Institute of Concrete Structures at Technical University Dresden (TUD) will launch the new joint research project "Pic2Bridge: Image-Based Engineering Design for Bridges". The project is scheduled to run from 01.08.2024 to 31.07.2025 and will be funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) with around 164.000 euros as part of the mFUND innovation initiative. The project aims to investigate the feasibility of 3D reconstruction of bridges based on a limited number of images. The project utilizes Structure from Motion (SfM) technology for 3D reconstruction, generating 3D models from 2D images by analyzing object movement from multiple angles. Systematic data collection and annotation, combined with AI-driven methods, will automate this process, enhancing the accuracy of 3D reconstruction. Ultimately, this approach will provide a better understanding of bridge design and the boundary conditions affecting bridge structures.
Pic2Bridge addresses the challenge of quality variability in bridge design, which is often influenced by the individual experience of engineers. By developing innovative methods to systematically analyze and reconstruct bridge structures using freely accessible data sources like images, Pic2Bridge significantly improves the design process. Employing Structure from Motion (SfM) technology, the project generates detailed 3D models from a limited number of images, thereby automating the extraction and processing of information. This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional methods and provides a more objective and comprehensive basis for bridge design, enhancing both consistency and quality.
